So many men have written to me in order to ask this question: “I would like to travel to Europe and look for a real relationship there, but how could I ask whether a woman’s is single tactfully?”

I understand that you don’t want to scare women off, so you don’t want to come across too keen. Meanwhile, you would like to guard your heart in case she is married. That’s why it’s important to find out whether she is single or not in the first place.
Note that anytime you are in a situation where you talk to a woman while trying offline dating, you take a small risk which might backfire – perhaps she is married, but please remember that you don’t really have a reason to feel embarrassed, as you can never read anyone’s mind. As I see it, you would be well-advised to have more conversations with a woman without being aggressive, so here are some example questions that you can ask her:
- “What did you do on the weekend?” (If she is in a relationship, she would probably tell you that she did ABC with her partner. If she is single, usually a partner wouldn’t be included in her answer.)
- “What’s your plan for the weekend?” (If she is single, she might be open to the idea of going out with you this weekend. This is an opportunity to ask her out for a date. But if she is married, she would probably mention her husband in her answer. And you know she isn’t the right candidate immediately, so you can move on.)
- It’s okay to ask “Do you have a boyfriend?”
Apart from the above-mentioned ways to get the answers quite casually (through a standard conversation instead of an interrogation), you can also ask a direct question: “Do you have a boyfriend?” Please let me explain.
When you feel that this woman is flirting with you, you should ask her a direction question because she is already showing interest in you. Why not have some progression now? If she doesn’t have a boyfriend, you should ask her out for a date immediately. But if she has a boyfriend, you know what to do – it’s time to meet other people. The direct approach is necessary if you travel to Europe as European women like honesty.
