Working holiday in Australia: The interesting work experience

Before the pandemic, I had a working holiday visa in Australia which allowed me to work in the retail environment for a while. It was a very enlightening experience.

  • The retail environment in Australia:

I started as a Christmas casual in a clothing store at that time. My first task in the store was to do a mark-down for the sale:

Stage 1: Print the markdown list and pull out 1 item per style & use a pencil to write down the new price on the back of the price tag, and then put them on a rack – this rail is the sale menu.

Stage 2: According to the sale menu, find all items that are going to be on sale. Put them on racks. Use a red pen to write down the new price on the price tag.

A message from my mentor at that time:

There are many things that you can learn and improve when it comes to sales because this is an art form that can always be polished. If you have a question about a certain interaction /customer behavior, please ask me so that I will help you figure it out.

Your product knowledge is very important, so you may need to study all products on our websites – read the product descriptions and customers’ reviews; pay attention to the photos and see how each outfit is put together.

If we have a sale section, please re-fill more frequently and make sure the sale section is as full as possible because we need to show the customers what we have. The first thing that customers see is supposed to be the best-selling product or the most expensive product. You can figure out which product is more popular according to the customers’ reaction and then adjust what you show the customer first accordingly – you can rearrange the products in the sale section.

The gist: generate leads – keep the customer interested – qualify the customer – prevent/identify objection – overcome objection – close the sale

Another way to look at the sales process: get the customer’s attention – build trust – build a relationship with the customer – close the sale.

From ABC to ABG:

Always Be Closing (ABC): the pushy salesperson who has no tact

Always Be Giving (ABG): the switched-on salesperson who has a lot of tact – As I said earlier, you can only get what you give. The law of Reciprocity is real.

Customers feel that I’m always giving them attention, help, support, interesting conversations, and good value. As a matter of fact, that’s how I close a lot of sales quickly.

  • Why is a working holiday visa in Australia very valuable?

A working holiday visa in Australia allows the visa-holder to work in Australia, so the tourist can make an income while living in Australia. It’s a great way to experience this country while having the financial resource to support the trip at the same time. As a result, it is one of the most popular visa types in the southern hemisphere.

“Many young people have traveled in the southern hemisphere where the air is so fresh and the sky is so blue.”
