Living in Australia: A modern & simplified lifestyle

When I went to the United States many years ago, I arrived at Los Angeles International Airport where staff members looked extremely serious. I understand that their job is not easy as that’s a big airport and security is important. But I heard their staff arguing with tourists and they looked so miserable. I spent a week and a half in the United States. When I left via Miami Airport, a staff member at the airport saw my Australian ID and said, “You are from Australia. I really envy you because every Australian that I’ve met is so nice, happy and friendly.” – She said that as if ‘nice, happy and friendly’ is an uncommon quality in people. After living in many different countries, now I can confirm that living in Australia is the best experience because the Australian lifestyle is indeed the best I’ve ever had.

I lived in Asia for many years and I noticed that the Asian culture is highly competitive due to their big population. Hence, most people in Asia are hardworking, smart and practical, which is understandable. But honestly, I couldn’t fully relax when I was in Asia as work and life were both quite intense. However, I would like to point out that Asia has a wide variety of benefits and advantages, e.g., great food, convenient facilities, efficient technologies, beautiful fashion, and so on.

The simplified lifestyle:

In contrast, the Australian culture is quite different because the competition isn’t fierce in Australia – the population is small. As a result, I feel more relaxed in Australia. For example, when I was living in Asia, I had to dress very well every single day and wear makeup most of the time, for the competition was increasingly stiff in Asia & everyone was keen to increase their perceived value. Nevertheless, currently, I’m living in Australia, so I don’t have to wear high heels and formal clothes every day anymore. At last, I can relax! That being said, it doesn’t mean I don’t dress up these days. In fact, I appreciate fashion tremendously and I have my own fashion rules:

⦁ Nowadays I only buy clothes from three brands: Review, Gorman and Blue Illusion. These are all Australian womenswear brands. I like these 3 brands because I love colours and feminine styles. Vintage looks inspired the Review outfits. Gorman is funky and artistic. Blue Illusion is a typical maximalist style. Actually, I am not a maximalist, but I like the typical maximalist’s striking beauty. Thus, my principle is to have fewer clothes, but each item is full of intriguing magic (quality over quantity).

⦁ I don’t buy anything that requires dry cleaning or hand washing. I prefer clothes that can be washed by the washing machine. This is because my time is more important and much more valuable. My closet is here to look after me (not the other way around). I also don’t buy anything that has buttons because I don’t want to deal with a missing button.

⦁ Most of the pieces in my wardrobe are natural fabrics such as cotton, linen and silk. The majority of them are cotton because less ironing is better. I am not a fan of polyester as it smells like petrol.

Living in Australia means having simple but paramount values.

Australians are very laid-back as mainstream values in Australia are simple but significant:

⦁ Freedom is important. Since Australia is a big country with a small population, people have a lot of space which gives everyone more freedom. Also, I’ve never seen an Australian who is stuck in a job that they hate. This is because Australians always do what they love when it comes to work. That’s their professional and personal freedom.

⦁ Family and friends are priorities. Most Australians have friends whom they’ve known for a very long time (since their childhood). What’s more, family is always most people’s No. 1 priority in Australia.

⦁ It has to be fair. Fairness is something that Australians prioritize. Equality of opportunity is highly regarded.

“Living in Australia gives me many insights into the modern lifestyle.”
