Thoughts on the road: How do you identify yourself?

I want to lose 10 kilos this year,” says Aaron, “But I don’t know where to start.”
Aaron and I travel together, so we chat a lot on the road. My advice for Aaron is to focus on being someone that is fit, healthy and athletic instead of losing 10 kilos. Having the right identity is so key. 😊

  • The power of identity:

Before the pandemic, I was a program director at university. But the pandemic has forced our department to be shut down permanently – everyone was made redundant because we didn’t have enough students.

At that time, all of my colleagues from that department were stressed out as it happened quite suddenly. Nobody was prepared for such a surprise. Everyone had to seek alternative careers because the higher education industry wasn’t hiring.

I became a salesperson for a big corporation after redundancy and I have built a successful sales career quickly. The secret to my success as a sales professional is having a new identity: I’m a capable sales professional. Within one year, I got a promotion – I became a sales manager of that corporation.

Since Aaron wants to lose weight, he would be well-advised to create a new identity: He is a fit, healthy and athletic person. All of his habits must contribute to this new identity. If he can implement his new habits consistently, he will achieve his goal without overthinking. 😉

  • Notes on the road: How to make the new identity work

First of all, you’d better decide and reinforce the new identity. Then you take the appropriate action by having a daily routine that will help you get what you want. Remember: ordinary actions that are taken consistently create extraordinary results.

Next, you need feedback. The faster you take action, the sooner you get the feedback. After getting the feedback, you reinforce your new identity and take appropriate action (do it again)!
