Sometimes I would take an international trip for several months (I usually have at least one “mini retirement” once a year, i.e., I go somewhere for a change of scenery and enjoy life). People have asked me what I do during a relatively long trip, so I’m going to share my answer here today.
- I read books and study something new.
I always travel with books. Now I tend to take my Kindle with me so that I don’t have to keep many books in my luggage. The reason I travel with books/eBooks is because I love reading, especially on the plane.
Indeed, I almost never watch movies on the plane, so the entertainment on the screen is irrelevant to my reality. I prefer reading a good book quietly on the plane.
Also, before I go to sleep at night, I read at least one chapter of a book – this habit helps me to sleep well.
From my perspective, a relatively long international trip which lasts for a few months provides me with an interesting lifestyle rather than just a trip. Therefore, I go to places of interest during the daytime and study something new in my hotel room at night. That’s exactly why my laptop is my most important travel accessory (I study online programs on my laptop.)
Yes, I like seeing different tourist attractions and filling my brain with good information.

- I write regularly.
Whenever I feel inspired, I would write a blog article about something stimulating. Usually, when I have a relatively long international trip, I would write a few articles each week based on my experiences and observation during the trip. Many articles on this website were written while I was visiting somewhere exciting.
Although my trip is a mini retirement, I still write blog posts during trips because writing doesn’t feel like work at all. I’m glad that I have a portfolio life, i.e., writing is a part of my work & it’s the most relaxing part – it is a type of meditation.
Some people think clearly and then they can write, but I’m the opposite: I write first and then I think clearly – the more I write, the clearer my thoughts are. 😉
