Living in New Zealand: How to know what your priorities are

From 2002 to 2006, I was living in New Zealand. At that time, I was much younger and was still trying to figure out life. While I was navigating my life in New Zealand, I learned how to prioritize things and be more focused.

  • What’s truly important to you?

Gary Vaynerchuk says, “The most important thing in my life is the health and wellbeing of my family. Family first, business second.”

He knows what’s important to him.

Do you know what’s important to you?

Well, from my perspective, the health & wellbeing of my family must be the No. 1 priority in life.

I resigned from a famous organization because although the pay was great, the job was not good for my health,” says Liz, my best friend, “My boss at that time was too difficult. After having a meeting with her, I needed a few days off just to recover from the meeting. I couldn’t do that for too long because I literally couldn’t sleep at night after each meeting with her, and I couldn’t tell her that I actually needed sick leave after every meeting. She just made me sick.”

Currently, Liz is working for another organization which pays her a bit less, but she says her current boss is a more reasonable person.

I met Liz when I was living in New Zealand.

We used to read self-help books together and talk about what we learned from those books. It was just like a book club for two people.

Now we are still very close.

We have an accountability chat every week: On Sunday night we talk to each other and discuss what we have done during the week to achieve our goals.

  • Different stages in life have different priorities.

When you have a goal that you must achieve no matter what, you develop a sense of urgency.

At this stage in your life, you must prioritize whatever that can help you achieve your goal, which is understandable.

After achieving that particular goal, you are at a different stage, so your needs have changed. What was important in the past can be irrelevant now. That’s why you need a new strategy.

My most paramount advice for you is to keep your goals confidential – only you need to know what your goals are because the secret to success is the word secret!

If you tell other people what you want to achieve, they might laugh at you or tell you why that’s unrealistic unless they are on the same page with you.

For instance, my friend Liz and I are on the same page – this is not very common because not everyone can meet like-minded people in life.

I’m glad that I lived in New Zealand and met Liz who is an extremely intelligent, supportive and helpful person.

“In order to make your life more rewarding and meaningful, you have to know what your current priorities are.”
