How to be happily and successfully location independent

Since COVID-19 has ended according to World Health Organization (WHO), an increasing number of individuals are looking to travel more frequently & many of them would like to be location independent, i.e., they prefer doing remote work so that they don’t have to live in a specific place.

  • Typical remote work for location independent workers:
  1. Writing – Many freelance copywriters, ghost-writers, bloggers and content marketers don’t need to work for a particular company because they have their own clients on the Internet.
  1. Translation – A lot of translation work can be done online. Translators don’t have to sit in a specific office.
  1. Internet marketing – Online marketers only need access to the Internet in order to get the job done.
  1. Graphic design – Graphic designers can be freelancers without a specific employer.

Obviously, all of the above-mentioned jobs require real skills, but none of them require a degree if you only want to work online, although some of those may require a relevant certificate or license. Personally, I’ve done almost all of them already and I can confirm that being location independent is definitely a good idea because it’s convenient, flexible, modern and interesting. A location independent worker’s work is also a lifestyle.

  • The difference between location independent people and digital nomads:

Location independent people usually have a home base, whereas digital nomads generally travel all the time.

What about freelancers?

Well, freelancers oftentimes stay at a certain place because they probably don’t travel that much. Basically, most freelancers don’t even travel.

Therefore, digital nomads move from one place to another, but freelancers don’t necessarily travel. Location independent workers are somewhere in between.

If you are keen to be a digital nomad, perhaps you can start from being a freelancer and then try to have at least 3 clients first, and when the time is right, you can explore your next steps.

Basically, if you are happy to pursue such a lifestyle, you need the following resources:

  1. Online clients (at least three high-quality clients);
  1. A laptop;
  1. Access to the Internet;
  1. Social skills (You will probably need to meet new people in other places).

Of course, you would be well-advised to keep learning because what’s working today may not work tomorrow, e.g., writing and translating can be done by AI already, so maybe you’ll need to figure out something else?!
