Since I’ve been a digital nomad for more than two decades, I’ve received many questions about this lifestyle because nowadays more and more people are interested in working online. Therefore, in this article, I’ll talk about some key ideas that future lifestyle entrepreneurs need to be aware of.
Don’t invest in an unproven business model.
Yes, working on the internet while living in different locations can be very exciting, but that requires very careful planning.
If you are not 25 years old, perhaps you shouldn’t invest in unproven business models.
Indeed, reading books about how wildly famous online companies became successful could be very inspiring. Personally, I’ve read those books as well. Basically, it all boils down to three factors that contributed to their success: 1) a lot of hard work; 2) outstanding intelligence; 3) good luck, including having the right connections at the right time.
Even Gary Vaynerchuk once said, “People underestimate the importance of luck.” In fact, Gary Vaynerchuk believes that the only variable that people can control is how hard they work.
The most practical business models for the majority of new digital nomads are freelance work: writing, translation, video editing, graphic design, etc. If you would like to make a living by working online, these are very viable, low-risk options. They might not sound as glamorous as being the CEO of Google, but these are down-to-earth areas to get started.
Also, when you make some money from your online business, please don’t invest all your money back into the business. It’s better to only invest in what’s necessary and save more money for yourself! You’ll thank me later.

- Invest in your experiences.
As a seasoned digital nomad, I don’t buy luxury clothes, shoes, bags or watches to impress anyone. Instead, I buy experiences that invigorate me. For example, I go to concerts several times a year; I try different cuisines at beautiful restaurants; I enjoy holidays with my friends at exotic locations.
Whenever I look back on those wonderful experiences that I’ve had in my life, I feel energized. I cherish each experience tremendously.
“The digital nomad’s life isn’t always sunshine and roses, but if you take calculated risks and make informed decisions, you’ll be able to have a rewarding journey.”
